Chia Hui Chian (1940-1985) started painting at 16 years with early influence by his elder brother, Chia Yu Chian. Later he found his own style, concentrating on pastel works.

He was adept in exploring strong pastel textures dominated by dark energetic lines, thereby creating exciting works of a lesser used medium. And using odd-sized paper, he would accentuate unusual perspectives, sometimes amusing, in his subject.

Chia Hui Chian's artistic brilliance was substantiated by the number of awards during his short tenure:

1960 Certificte of merit in the Singapore Ministry of Culture Exhibition

1960 1st Prize in Pastels in the 4th Young Malayan Artists Exhibition

1961 1st Prize in Pastels in the 5th Young Malayan Artists Exhibition

1962 2nd Prize in Pastels in the 1st Federation Art Competition

1964 1st Prize in Pastels in the The Joy of Living National Art Competition.

Hui Chian's 1960 1st Prize in Pastels creation in the 4th Young Malayan Artists Exhibition

was acquired by The National Art Gallery.

In April 1963, Hui Chian had his first solo exhibition in Penang where 60 of his works were sold!
